Mike Ashley, the retail magnate behind Frasers Group
Mike Ashley, the retail magnate behind Frasers Group, has escalated his pursuit of German fashion label Hugo Boss, boosting his ownership to nearly half of the company. This move signals that his recent acquisition spree, which included the purchase of the Harvey Nichols chain, is far from winding down.
Frasers Group, which operates a vast portfolio of sports and lifestyle retail brands, now holds a 48% stake in Hugo Boss. The increase follows a tender offer made in June, when Ashley proposed a nearly €2 billion deal to take over the luxury house. Hugo Boss’s board, however, dismissed the bid as insufficient and advised shareholders to reject it.
The latest stake rise came after 17.6% of Hugo Boss shareholders accepted Ashley’s offer of €38 per share. That price represented a modest 4% premium over the company’s market value at the time, reflecting Ashley’s strategic approach to building influence without paying a hefty premium.
Industry analysts view this development as a calculated
Industry analysts view this development as a calculated step toward greater control. Axel Rudolph, an analyst at investment platform IG, noted that the expanded shareholding places Frasers Group in a powerful position to steer the direction of the German fashion house. “It’s another major step towards gaining control,” he said, adding that Ashley’s maneuvering positions the company firmly in the driver’s seat.
The move comes on the heels of Frasers Group’s acquisition of Harvey Nichols department stores, reportedly for £40 million, underscoring Ashley’s aggressive expansion strategy in both luxury and mainstream retail sectors. With his growing influence in Hugo Boss, the question now is whether Ashley will seek a full takeover or continue to consolidate his power over time.
